Water Hardness in Bristol
Bristol Water publishes a range rather than a figure for the city, describing all the water in its area as moderately hard to very hard because the rocks are predominantly limestone. On its own scale that means at least 151 milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate. It also says plainly that there is no water quality standard requiring it to soften the water, so a communal system here carries a scale burden that a Plymouth or Truro one does not.
Who Is Responsible for What in Bristol
Bristol is one of the places where the two utilities are different companies. Water supply is Bristol Water; sewerage is Wessex Water, and the council routes all drainage enquiries on a search to Wessex. Wessex's published position is that most shared sewer pipes, meaning pipes connecting two or more properties, are its responsibility, which is the sentence worth having to hand when a blockage in a block is disputed. Note the qualifier: most, not all.
