The Fire and Rescue Service for Bristol

Bristol is covered by Avon Fire and Rescue Service, not by Devon and Somerset. Avon also covers Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Its average total response to a primary fire in the year to March 2026 was 10 minutes 3 seconds, the fastest of the five services covering the South West, and 69.8 per cent of dwelling fires were reached within ten minutes. Avon also has genuine high-rise residential stock: it recorded 21 of the 29 fires in blocks of ten storeys or more across all five South West services in that year.

What Has to Be Sent to the Fire Service in Bristol

Avon has the strongest local requirement of the five on secure information boxes. Its appliances carry a Gerda key box, and if a different box is fitted the responsible person must put access in place, for example a key safe beside it with the code passed to the service. The service also asks to be told where the box is so it goes into its mobilising system. Regulation 6 plans go by email to its CAD plans address.

Automatic Alarms and Whether They Get a Response in Bristol

Avon call-challenges communal alarms in blocks. Sheltered housing and care homes get an automatic response, but its published position is that all other premises providing sleeping accommodation, including private and domestic flats, are subject to a call challenge. A call from an alarm receiving centre brings no automatic response unless a keyholder confirms a fire. For a block that means the monitoring contract and a reachable keyholder matter more here than in Dorset or Cornwall, where a communal alarm still brings an appliance.

What We Do About Fire Safety Compliance in Bristol

Fire safety compliance in Bristol is part of a full management service. What we actually do:

  • Send what this fire and rescue service asks for, in the form it asks for it.
  • Hold the building information in the form Regulation 4 requires, updated as the building changes.
  • Design the detection strategy around the attendance policy that applies here.

That work sits inside a fixed annual management fee. We take no commission on contractor work, so there is no incentive on our side for the job to get bigger.

How This Works, in General

The law here is the same in Bristol as it is anywhere in England, and it is set out in full on our compliance-health-and-safety page rather than repeated on this one. What changes locally is above: the authority, the figures, and what the tribunal has actually done with cases nearby.
