The design standards decide whether the lorry can serve the block at all. Crews will not move a four-wheeled bin more than 10 metres from the vehicle, or a box more than 15, and will not move anything up or down steps. Stores must be within 30 metres of the dwelling, have at least 2.2 metres of internal headroom so lids can be opened in place, leave a 150 millimetre gap between containers, and have doorways of at least 2 metres square. Roads need 5 metres of width and reversing distances must not exceed 12. Below six units the council expects individual bins rather than communal ones. And developers must give the council the door access codes before the first occupants move in.
